Built to Last: Strengthening the Foundations of Our Community

If you have been through downtown Seneca recently, you have seen the changes taking place. Buildings are being improved, roads are being resurfaced, and while the work can be inconvenient, the temporary delays will be worth it in the end.

What stands out to me is that this project goes beyond patching potholes. Crews are taking the roads down to the base layer and rebuilding them from the foundation upward. They are addressing problems that have existed for years rather than applying another temporary fix.

A Lesson in Building Something That Lasts

There is a lesson, in that, for all of us.

Whether we are talking about our roads, our families, or our relationship with God, we can only patch things up for so long. Eventually, we must return to the foundation. We must be willing to acknowledge where things have gotten off track and do the hard work necessary to build something stronger and more lasting.

The Challenges Facing Families in Our Community

At Collins Family Ministries, we meet families struggling to make ends meet, single mothers facing homelessness, and at-risk youth searching for stability. In Oconee County, 36% of children are raised in single-parent homes by parents doing the best they can under difficult circumstances. Of those households, 42% live in poverty. That means more than a third of our community's children face significant challenges before they even begin the school day.

Creating Pathways From Crisis to Stability

So how do we move forward?

First, we must be willing to have honest conversations about the challenges facing our community. Second, we must create clear pathways that help people move from crisis to stability. Finally, we must be willing to invest our time, resources, and compassion to help others succeed.

Our Built to Last Initiative

At Collins Family Ministries, we are doing our part through our Built to Last initiative. In the coming years, we will focus on key pathways designed to strengthen families and support vulnerable children.

Rise and Shine: Providing Stability and Hope

Our Rise and Shine program will provide a tiny home community and support services for single mothers and at-risk youth on our Seneca campus. Through an 18-to-24-month journey, participants will gain stability, life skills, and hope for the future.

Restoration: Supporting Vulnerable Children and Families

We will also continue serving neglected and vulnerable children through our Restoration services that provide material support, foster family housing, and foster parent recruitment.

Investing in a Stronger Future Together

Just as Seneca is investing in a stronger foundation for its future, we believe lasting change begins by strengthening the foundations of family, faith, and community.
