When Suffering Produces Hope
Life brings many kinds of suffering. Physical pain can limit our ability to enjoy daily activities. Mental struggles can cloud our thinking and perspective. Emotional wounds can make it difficult to experience joy in our relationships. Most of us have experienced at least one of these forms of suffering, and many have experienced all three
A Different Perspective on Pain
From a worldly perspective, suffering often feels pointless. It can seem like punishment with no purpose. But God's Word gives us a different perspective.
What Scripture Says About Suffering
Romans 5:1-5 describes suffering this way. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
When Suffering Has a Purpose
While suffering is never something we seek or enjoy, Christ gives it purpose. In Romans 5, Paul reminds us that suffering is not meaningless. God can use it to develop perseverance, shape our character, and deepen our hope in Him. What feels like a painful struggle today can become part of God's work of transforming us into the likeness of Christ.
Choosing How We Respond
Over the past three years, I have walked alongside countless families, children, and at-risk youth who have endured unimaginable hardship. Their stories have revealed a powerful truth: suffering will either draw us closer to Christ or drive us toward bitterness. We cannot choose whether suffering will come, but we can choose how we respond to it. Will we allow God to use it to refine us, or will we allow it to take root in our hearts and keep us captive?
God Never Wastes Our Pain
As believers, we can find hope in knowing that God never wastes our pain. Even in our darkest moments, He is at work, producing something eternal within us.
"God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains. It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."
– C. S. Lewis
Trusting God in the Hardest Seasons
This quote has helped me navigate some of the most difficult seasons of my own life. My prayer is that it encourages you as well, reminding you that God is present even in suffering and that He can use our pain to point us, and others, toward the hope found in Jesus Christ. In a world that desperately needs that hope, may we learn to hear His voice and trust His purpose, even in the midst of hardship.
